Social Events

Once again, the MLX social events calendar promises to be a highlight of the weekend and a great opportunity to get to know your fellow lindy hoppers and show off some smooth moves. In keeping with the theme of “Harlem comes to Melbourne” the Melbourne Lindy Exchange will import some of the ambience, fun, and passion for great dance to great music that pervaded the Harlem nightclub district of the 1930’s and 40’s.

The weekend opens with a night of social dancing to get your toes tapping. Come and watch the representatives of Ireland, Sweden, Canada, the USA, Britain and Australia play some great tunes as they go head to head in the International Battle of the DJ’s!

Tribute to Harlem

Learn something new about Harlem in the age of the Big Bands as we present an evening of words and dance from this amazing era. Look forward to a presentation from our international teachers, including Janice Wilson, from the US and see some great dance performances from Australia’s best and abroad. Then, put your learning into action on the social dance floor as Back Pocket who made such an impact at last years MLX swing you out and, later, some of your best DJ’s continue into the wee small hours.

Lindy in the Park

It’s back! Let loose some lindy moves under the sunshine and amongst the beautiful greenery of Melbourne’s inner city parklands. Show the Melbourne public how it should be done.

MLX Ball: Battle of the Big Bands

This will be an amazing showdown between two of Melbourne’s finest swing ensembles in MLX’s own Battle of the Big Bands! Steve Purcell’s Pearly Shells Swing Orchestra will take on Yvette Johansson and the Ross Irwin Big Band as they provide a continuous stream of swingin’ sounds. The Savoy Ballroom comes to Melbourne as Central Hall becomes the new “home of happy feet”.

The Rent Party

Continue dancing into the late night hours at the place where swing dancing started - the Rent Party. Everyday people getting together in someone’s home to help them make their next rent money, while being in a melting a pot with friends, music and the movement that started it all. Enjoy the company of your fellow dancers in a cruisy atmosphere as you lounge, sit-back and just enjoy the party.

Out for the Count

If you’re still standing, keep dancing ‘til you’re Out for the Count. Come and enjoy a great 14 piece big band that play to Melbourne’s dancers every week. Mayfields is also the perfect venue for winding down the long weekend. Dance those sore feet off or chill out with a nice smooth latte.
